New MoTeC Knock Modules—Available 1 November 2008

MoTeC is excited to announce the launch of our new Knock Modules, which enable individual cylinder closed loop knock control on our hundred series ECUs.
There are two variants:

Standalone Knock Module (SKM). This module is housed in a robust aluminium casing that can be mounted anywhere in the vehicle. It is wired between the ECU and the OEM fitted knock sensor.

Onboard Knock Module (OKM). This module is fitted onto the board of an M800 Plug-In ECU prior to
delivery. Plug-Ins are available for selected vehicles.

Both modules work in conjunction with MoTeC’s ECU Manager software (v3.5) and allow tuners to use optimum ignition maps with the confidence that the engine will be safe from dangerous detonation. Detonation (also called "spark knock") is an erratic form of combustion that can cause catastrophic engine failure. Most modern engines are fitted with a piezoelectric knock sensor to measure knock levels. To set up a reliable electronic knock control system it is necessary to determine knock levels accurately and differentiate knock from normal engine noise. MoTeC’s knock modules use the vehicle’s original, factory-fitted knock sensors to detect detonation, improving this detection by reducing the influence of background engine noise using a combination of data gating and frequency filtering.

A competent tuner needs to carry out a frequency analysis to determine the target frequency and knock module settings. This is highly specialised work and therefore the new MoTeC Knock Modules will only be available through authorised dealers that have undertaken specific training.
